Frequently Asked Questions

Who pays for shipping?

The customer pays to ship the quilt top to us. We pay all shipping costs to return the completed quilt to the customer.

What is the process for sending a project to Open Door Quilting for quilting?

After you check out and pay online, simply mail your quilt top and whatever else you are sending (backing fabric, batting, binding fabric, etc.) to us. Mail the package to:

Michael Baker

Open Door Quilting

424 Primrose Lane

Shelby, AL 35143

We will let you know when we receive your quilt top. Please  be sure to read the information on the Quilt Prep Page of the website prior to packaging your quilt top.

What is the turn around time on a quilt?

It will depend on how many quilts are ahead of yours. The average turnaround time is about 2 weeks. If you need an item completed sooner, let us know, and we’ll see what we can do for you.

If my quilt top is finished but I don’t have backing fabric, can you supply the fabric for the backing?

Yes, we can take your quilt top at whatever stage you have it and take it as close to completion as you want us to.

If you have backing fabric but you don’t have batting, then we can supply the batting.

If you don’t have fabric for the binding, then we can provide the fabric for the binding.

We can make the binding and attach it to the quilt.

Of course the price of the finished quilt will depend on exactly what it is we need to do.

Can you finish a quilt top that was passed along to me from my mother or grandmother but was never quilted?

Yes! We can not only turn that pieced top into a completed quilt, but we can provide whatever is necessary to accomplish that – batting, backing fabric, binding, etc.

Can the front and back be different thread colors?

Yes, we can use different thread colors for the front and back. On a custom quilt, sometimes several colors of threads are used to best suit the area of the quilt where they are used.

If you know the color(s) of thread that you want us to use, then you can give us that information on the checkout page. There is a box there in the Checkout tutorial that you can enter any special notes or instructions.

The thread chosen does not change the price; it is included with the quilting.

What if my quilt has a lot of large appliqué on it?

This would probably be a custom quilt. Depending on the type and color of thread used, it’s sometimes okay to stitch over the appliqué and not detract from its beauty. However, if the appliqués are large, then we think it’s best to at least provide some stitching over the appliqué. This can be done with colored thread but can also be done with clear monofilament thread to minimize the thread/stitching being seen.

What type of thread do you use?

We prefer to use Glide or ISACORD No. 40 polyester thread. If you prefer a different brand or weight of thread, let us know. If we don’t already have it, we should be able to get it while your quilt is in the queue waiting to be quilted. The two links below will open documents listing all the colors available. Please note that the color displayed on your device may vary slightly from the actual color.

If you know the color(s) of thread that you want us to use, then you can give us that information on the checkout page. There is a box there in the Checkout tutorial that you can enter any special notes or instructions.

The thread chosen does not change the price; it is included with the quilting. There is no additional charge for the thread.

What size quilt can you quilt?

We can quilt anything up to 120” wide.

What type of batting do you use?

We normally use The Warm Company Warm & Natural cotton batting, the Warm Company Warm & White cotton batting or Dream Quilters White Dream Cotton Select – Midloft. We can provide different batting if you prefer something else. We would simply adjust the pricing up or down according to the cost of the alternate batting and let you know the difference.
